Description
Civil War Parole Gainesville, Alabama Forrest Cavalry Corps. This parole was issued May 10th, 1865 to Private James M. Reavis of Jackson (Madison County), Tennessee. The parole was by the order of U.S. Major General Edward Canby U.S.A. and signed by Elias Smith Dennis Brigadier General. James Reavis enlisted for service for the Confederate States of America and was assigned to the Engineer Corps under Forrest. He remained in service until the end of the war and his parole at Gainesville, Alabama. In 1862 he married Margaret A. Brown. He was a member of First Methodist Church, Jackson, Tennessee. Verso of document has a handwritten note dated May 10th, 1865 written by a Captain Engineer Forrest Cavalry. His signature is indecipherable but the note states that Private J. M. Reavis owns one private horse that should be returned to him. Document measures 4 3/4″ X 7 3/4″. Condition- Overall good condition with some creases and toning. See photos.
