Samuel J. Hays Slave Bill of Sale 1862, Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee. March 26th, 1862 recorded sale of an African American lady called Ellen, about 25 or 25 years of age, and her five children for $900. By Samuel J. Hays (1802-1866). Hays’ mother, Jane Donelson Hays, and President Andrew Jackson’s wife, Rachel, were sisters. Hays was an American militia officer, lawyer, slave owner, plantation owner, and railroad investor in West Tennessee. The sale was registered by the county court clerk of Madison County in Jackson, Tennessee. The document details the transaction. Condition- Toning, stains, and some wear. See photos.
