Description
1 Rare Hardcover The Young Voyager to the South Seas; Part 1 – Visit to the Georgian and Society Islands (French Polynesia, Tahiti and Bora Bora) published by Durrie & Peck, New Haven c. 1832. Printed by Hezekiah Howe & Co. Marbled boards with fragile cloth spine. One map and six engravings, five of which are hand-colored (see photos) including an early view of Rio de Janeiro and Cape Horn. Durrie & Peck, a New Haven-based firm that operated from 1818 to 1857, sold books and stationery, engaged in printing and bookbinding, and published a wide array of schoolbooks. They were known for their 19th-century juvenile series. 96 pages in English. Book measures 5 3/8" x 4 1/8" x 3/4"
Condition: Condition – Fair/Good – Text block is soiled and stained. Hinge split. Foxing throughout. Looks like it may have been wet at some point in its life. Colors on engravings are strong. Likely missing marbled end papers. Former owner (Francis E. Pinto) ex-libirs inside front cover. Hinge spilt but intact. Marbled boards are bowed with soiling and wear to corners and edge. Spine is mostly deteriorated with remnants of cloth intact. Please see photos for condition.
