2 Hardcover 19th English Literature Books – 1 The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith published by John C. Nimmo London c. 1886. Three Quarter Brown Moroccan Leather with marbled boards and end papers. Gilt decoration and lettering with raised bands on spine. Top edge gilt. One of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among the British citizenry, and remains a classic of English literature. Large format, 291 pages, 114 color illustrations in English. Book measures 10 1/4" x 7 1/4" x 1 3/8"; and Coelebs Deceived Volume II by Harriet Corp Printed for the Author and sold at Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy London c. 1817 (English 1st Edition). Half bound brown calf leather with marbled boards and end papers. Embossed cover. Gold tooling and lettering on spine. Marbled edges on all around. Harriet Corp was an obscure early nineteenth-century writer of religious and didactic fiction (both novels and short stories) with striking talent and intelligence, as well as a strong interest in the spiritual and material condition of the poor. Though earnest, she is also full of humour and common sense. Her most striking works were produced by a desire to answer the writings of other. 185 pages in English. Book measures 7 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 9/16"
Condition: The Vicar of Wakefield – Condition – Very Good – Binding tight. Front and back cover show minor wear to edges and corners. Spine has wear to joint, head and tail. Beautiful marbled end papers that match cover. Newspaper clipping and Goldsmith portrait glued to first non-marbled end paper; Foxing throughout. Coelebs Deceived – Condition – Very Good – Cover soiled, some loss to edges and corners. Spine is faded and has loss to joint, head and tail. Ink number inside front cover.
