Description
Small Civil War Trunk/Chest Belonging To Swasey. The trunk is leathered covered and brass tack decorated. The interior lid of the trunk has the original label, "Lieut. C. H. Swasey, U.S.S. Varuna Gulf Squadron. Belonging to Charles H. Swasey (June 21, 1839- October 4, 1862). Swasey served aboard the Varuna in the engagement with the CSS Governor Moore steamer below New Orleans, Louisiana, on 24 April 1862. He then served as executive officer of Sciota on the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. He was wounded during an engagement with Confederate forces near Donaldsonville, LA, on 4 October 1862, and died the same day. Two ships have been named USS Swasey in his honor. Measures 14 1/2" high x 16" long x 10" deep. Condition- Most of the leather is missing and the leather that is present is not in good condition. Wood is in overall good aged condition. Most of the original brass tack decoration is present. See photos.
