Description
American Classical Mahogany Tester Bed C. 1850. This bed was originally in the Tappan-Pillow House (National Historic Register) at 717 Poplar Street, Helena, Arkansas. The mansion was home to James C. Tappan, one of several Confederate Generals from Helena. Tappan graduated from Yale University in 1845. General Tappan studied law in Vicksburg and was admitted to the Mississippi bar in 1846. Tappan saw action at the Battle of Belmont and made repeated charges on the Hornet’s Nest at The battle of Shiloh. After the war Tappan was nominated for governor of Arkansas on two occasions. The home was used as headquarters for Union troops during their occupation. General William T. Sherman used the home as living quarters while he was in the area. The headboard of this bed has a bullet hole quite possibly from the war. The history of the bullet hole is unknown and will require further research. This bed was acquired from the Tappan-Pillow House by Ken Robison and was part of the 1855 Annesdale (National Historic Register) Mansion Collection at 1325 Lamar Avenue, Memphis, TN. Measures 111" High X 93" Long X 74 3/4" wide. A full size mattress will fit this bed. Condition – Small caliber bullet hole in headboard. Tester top is not original to bed but had been used with bed for years. The bed has veneer loss and damage to footboard, one rail and tester top.
