Description

Late 19th Century Chehaw, Alabama Railroad Station Sign. Painted wooden sign with gold-leaf letters. Measures 2" deep X 11" wide X 50 1/2" long. Chehaw was located just north of Tuskegee, Alabama. The Tuskegee Railroad was a 5 1/2 mile long railroad that connected Tuskegee, Alabama to the West Point Railroad. The railroad was first constructed in 1860 and was destroyed during the American Civil War. It was reincorporated in 1872 and again in 1902 as The Tuskegee Railroad. In July 1864, the Battle of Chehaw Station was fought there. The battle consisted of US General L. H. Rousseau with 2,500 cavalry opposed by 500 Confederates, mostly 15-17 year old volunteers, poorly armed and trained.
