6 Volume Hardcover Set Manners & Customs of the Ancient Egyptians including their religion, agriculture, etc. derived from a comparison of the paintings, sculptures, and monuments still existing, with the accounts of ancient authors by Sir J. Gardner Wilkinson. Volumes I-III published by John Murray London c. 1837 1st Edition in black pebbled cloth covers with gilt Egyptian designs on spines and covers. Second Series Volumes I and II and volume of plates published by John Murray London c. 1841 in black pebbled cloth covers with gilt Egyptian designs on spines and covers. Wilkinson, known as the "Father of British Egyptology, " spent 12 years in Egypt visiting virtually every known ancient site, making skillful copies of paintings and inscriptions, and compiling copious notes on what he saw. On his return to England in 1833, he began publishing his researches in a series of works, the most important being Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians (first ed. 1837), which he followed four years later with the Second Series containing material he had omitted from the earlier work. Wilkinson s records of Egyptian antiquities prior to the advent of widespread tourism are an invaluable resource, and his numbering system for the tombs in the Valley of the Kings is still used today. Profusely illustrated including chromolithographs and pull out illustrations. 1st Edition – Volume I 407 pages, Volume II 446 pages, and Volume III 404 pages, Second Series Volume 1 444 pages, Volume II 483 pages, and Plate Volume 88 plates plus 37 page index. All in English. Each volume measures approximately 8 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 1 1/2.
