Description
A. C. Allen Maysville, Kentucky 5 Gallon Stoneware Jug. Impressed, "A. C. Allen, " and below, "5." Cobalt blue slip reads, "Maysville, KY Stone. Ware, " Very possible that this jug was intended to be a display or advertising jug for A. C. Allen Pottery until the defective firing. Auctioneers found an example online listed under, "Hand-Turned Stoneware Signed and Produced by Alabama Potters." The Alabama example is listed as, "A.C. Allen. Probably Mobile Merchant. Probably Baldwin County, " with a picture of an ovoid three gallon salt glaze jug impressed, "A. C. Allen." The stamp seems to be the same on both pieces. This five gallon Maysville jug has cobalt brush work handle decoration. Very unusual jug with large kiln impression defect on face of jug and smaller depression defect just under handle. Measures 18 3/4" high. These are the only examples of Allen’s work we were able to find. Provenance: Harold Boone Estate Tupelo, Mississippi. Condition- Jug is in good condition with some very small flakes from base edge and some glaze defects from manufacturer. See photos.
